What is Astigmatism

Many people have a small amount of astigmatism, & for most people, this has very little effect on their vision. However, high degrees of astigmatism can cause blurred vision for both far & near objects. Common complaints are headaches, distortion & tilting of images depending on its severity.The function of the cornea (front surface of the eye) is to refract light into the eye. However, it is usually not as spherical as a football & this results in an unequal bending of light rays entering the eyes. This refractive condition can occur together with myopia & other refractive conditions. It can also be corrected using spectacles, but special toric contact lenses may be required.
