Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) on Vision Therapy

How do I know if I will benefit from Orthoptic Vision Therapy?

Before commencing on any Orthoptic Vision Therapy, you (or your child) will need to attend a Standard Eye Examination (or Paediatric Eye Examination) to examine the general status of the eye's visual health. If there is a need, a full orthoptic/binocular vision assessment will commence with the aim of determining the extent of the vision problem, and how if affects reading, computer work or other daily activities.

If you pass the suitability test for Vision Therapy Sessions, you will need to book your session 1 week in advance. This will allow the IGARD Optometrist to customise the therapy programme for you. Your progress will be monitor during your follow-up visits.

What does Orthoptic Vision Therapy do to help in my eyesight? Will it help me?

Orthoptic vision therapy will only be recommended to a patient following a consultation for Standard Eye Examination or Paediatric Eye Examination. This will allow the general aspects of your eyes to be examined in detail. Orthoptic Vision Therapy helps in many ways. The American Optometric Association defines vision therapy (VT) as a “treatment plan used to correct or improve specific dysfunctions of the vision system. It includes, but is not limited to, the treatment of strabismus (turned eye), other dysfunctions of binocularity (eye teaming), amblyopic (lazy eye), accommodation (eye focusing), ocular motor function (general eye movement ability), and visual-perception-motor abilities. The vision therapy is based upon a medically necessary plan of treatment which is designed to improve specific vision dysfunctions determined by standardized diagnostic criteria.  Treatment plans encompass lenses, prisms, occlusion (eye patching), and other appropriate materials, modalities, and equipment. Orthoptic Vision Therapy does not employ the concepts of Bates Method.
